COPING WITH JOB BURNOUT

The most reliable and efficacious way of dealing with job burnout is to refrain from doing that job and opt for something else which may entail “changing jobs or careers.” Perchance, that is not the way out for you, there are still things you can do to improve your situation, or at least your state of mind.

- Actively Manage or Handle Challenges: Take a pragmatic rather than passive inactive steps to issues in your workplace, including stress at work. You’ll feel less helpless if you assert yourself and express your needs. If you don’t have the authority or resources to offer solution to the challenge at hand, engage your superior in a discussion over the issue.

- Clarify Your Job Definition: Request from your boss for an updated description of your job duties and responsibilities. Mark out the duties that are beyond your job parameter and bring it to the notice of the management and gain a little leverage for the overwork.

- Request For New/Fresh Responsibilities: If your job has been monotonous for a long time, request for something new; a different grade level, a new sales area, a different equipment.

- Take Time Off: If burnout seems inevitable, take a complete break from work. Go on vacation, use up your sick days, ask for a temporary leave-of-absence – anything to take you out from the scenario. Utilize the time away judiciously to recharge your batteries and take perspective.
